Beverley Richard was born in Nova Scotia to a long line of seafaring folk including sea captains and a lighthouse keeper. Her penchant for the saltwater shoreline has taken her along the Eastern seaboard to the islands of the Caribbean and the South Pacific, including French Polynesia and Australia. A keen sailor with ocean going cooking talent, she has worked on sail and power yachts and has used these opportunities to snorkel and beachcomb for seashells and beach glass.

Inspired by the natural form and beauty of these "found pieces", the idea for a way to display them came to her on a snowbound March evening in 1993. All aspects of this uniquely crafted product are the solo efforts of the artist. Beachcombing summer and winter and snorkeling when the weather and location permit produce the pieces that she then grades into size, shape and color. You might say that the pairs are "perfectly mismatched", working in a medium that has the same minor variances as snowflakes.

Folklore holds that a piece of beach glass was a tear shed by a mermaid for a lost sailor.
